Abstract:

The material-oriented movement in the 1950s and 60s has brought forth new types of works in plastic arts, called “mixed media” in English discourse. In basic terms, “mixed media”, which is the use of the related plastic outside the field, started with the fact that use of paper, found objects and textiles in the works of painters and sculptors. In the research, the qualitative method was followed with an interrogative and interpretive approach based on the descriptive model, and in this direction, the meanings of the English "mixed media" discourse, which is referred to as mixed material and/or mixed technique in the Turkish, in plastic arts and fiber art were evaluated. In the light of the findings, the first mixed media studies containing fiber and textile materials and textile techniques between the second half of the 1950s and the 1960s and 1970s, which were pioneers in fiber art and plastic arts, were selected. In addition to different fields such as plastic art and contemporary art, these works have also been accepted within the scope of fiber art in terms of the textile materials and textile techniques and have been analyzed descriptively in the research. As a result of the research, it has been seen that the pioneering mixed media works in fiber art have expanded the material repertoire of fiber art and shaped the mixed media environment in fiber art that will come after them.
