Abstract:

This study has been conducted to examine the effects of personality traits on communication skills of university students studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences, based on their involvemenet in individual and team sports. The sample consisted of 263 volunteer students randomly selected from Faculty of Sports Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Coaching, Recreation and Sports Management departments in the 2021-2022 academic year. The Communication Skills Assessment Scale, whose Turkish validity-reliability study was conducted by Karancı et al. (2007) and a questionnaire containing socio-demographic questions prepared by the researcher, whose Eysenck Personality Inventory was developed and validated by Korkut (1996), were used as data collection tools in the research. While it was observed that gender had a significantly lower effect on Neuroticism personality, no statistically significant difference was found between the effects of personality traits such as Extraversion, Psychoticism and Lying and gender on communication (p>0.05). When the findings are examined in terms of gender and sport type; There was no statistically significant difference between personality traits such as Neuroticism, Extraversion, Psychoticism and Lying, and the effect of sport type on communication skill level. In the study, it was concluded that there was no statistically significant difference in the level of communication skill of personality traits according to the findings of gender and individual-team sports status of university students studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences. As a result, it was found that only Neuroticism personality trait, which is one of the personality types in the Eysenck Personality Inventory subscales, has a significant effect on gender compared to male students.
