Manavgat Havzası Toros Karst Kuşağı\'nın Batı Toros Dağları kesiminde, derinlik ve yüzey karstının yoğun olarak geliştiği bir alanda yer almaktadır. Manavgat Havzası ve yakınlarındaki en eski drenaj ağının parçaları Orta Miosen dönemine ait paleokarstik vadilerden oluşur. Üst Tortonien\'de neotektonik hareketlerden önemli bir şekilde etkilenen sahada, tektonik ve yapısal hatlarla uyumlu yeni bir akarsu sistemi kurulmuştur. Bugünkü Manavgat Nehri Havzası ve drenaj ağı ile de uyumlu olan Üst Miosen paleovadileri Manavgat Nehri vadi sisteminin temellerinin bu dönemde atıldığını gösterir. Üst Miosen ve kısmen de Pliosen\'de Manavgat Nehri\'nin drenaj havzası, Beyşehir ve Suğla göllerini çevreleyen dağların güney yamaçlarına kadar uzanmaktaydı. Kuaterner başlarında ise meydana gelen genç tektManavgat Basin is on the West Taurus Mountain section of Taurus Karst Belt where surface and deep karst have densely developed. Manavgat Basin and the sections of latest drainage network near to it are formed out of paleokarstic valleys belonging to the Middle Miocene period. A new river system in accordance with tectonic and structural line has developed in the area, which is consequentially affected by the neotectonic movements in the Upper Tortonian. The Upper Miocene palaeovalleys, which are in accordance with present Manavgat River Basin and its drainage network, show that the bases of Manavgat River valley system has developed in the Upper Miocene. Manavgat River\'s drainage basin was stretching upto the south slopes of mountains surrounding Beyşehir and Suğla lakes in the Upper Miocene and partly in the Pliocene.
