Abstract The Cuban health yearbooks from 2000 to 2010, the 2010 World Health Statistics, as well as the "Health in Time" Bulletins issued by the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba for the same period were reviewed. The results of the study revealed that in the first decade of the third millennium, Cuba presents a morbidity corresponding to its mortality profile, where heart diseases, malignant tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, influenza and pneumonia, and accidents , constitute the first five causes of death. These results coincide in time with an oscillating process of decreased fertility and of the population in general, an increase in life expectancy, together with an accelerated aging process. This means the need to prepare the health system and Cuban society for the new conditions of its demographic structure.
