Abstract:

In the traditional processes of information transmission, ceremonies, stories and places serve as a carrier of social memory between generations. The beliefs and practices around birth, marriage and death, which are the transitional periods of life, are within the areas where the verbal culture tradition is preserved. Wedding ceremonies include practices that intensely host social solidarity and economic sharing models. The subject of the article is the tradition and functions of the bedroom that are included in the Gaziantep wedding ceremonies. The article aims to study the form of gifting in the over bed tradition and to evaluate the social solidarity and cultural transmission functions of this form of gifting. In this context, observation and conversation techniques were used from the public information collection methods, and the question form was prepared in accordance with the survey technique and information was received from the source persons residing in the city centre of Gaziantep. The over bed tradition is a practice made between women in the girl's house on a day determined in the week before the fourth new couples are taken home to sit. The fourth edition is presented to the guests invited. The guests who come to the bed will complete the cheese and bring gifts to support. This gift has changed from the past to the present in the form of goods, gold and money. In the area, the prominent word is used for gifts around the transition periods and other social events. The principle of reciprocity in the gift is essential. When the gift is not rewarded, the price is requested in accordance with the nature of the gift that was given before. The value of the gift brought to the bed is determined by the degree of relativity and compassion. The close relatives are obliged to complete the shortcomings of the fourth. The over bed tradition is an assembly that includes the exhibition of the hune and hands-on skills in the prepared quarter, entertainment, music, oral culture and literature and eating and drinking events among women. According to this, in the article, it is concluded that the over bed tradition in the Gaziantep wedding ceremonies has diverse socio-economic and cultural functions.
