Abstract:

This study aims to present the contributions of semiotics of translation to translators and translation process by analyzing Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Masque of the Red Death (1842) and its Turkish translations within the scope of semiotics of translation. The corpus of this study comprises Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, The Masque of the Red Death, published in 1842 and its Turkish translations by Tomris Uyar (1991), Nebiha Şentürk (2016), Nazire Ersöz (2017) and Hasan Fehmi Nemli (2018). In the semiotic analysis of the story, the semiotic analysis model propounded by Sündüz Öztürk Kasar (2009) based on the text analysis steps of Paris School of Semiotics was utilized. Four Turkish translations of the story were analyzed in line with the “the Systematics of Designification in Translation” by Öztürk Kasar (2021) through a descriptive approach. As a result of the translation evaluation which was conducted under the headings of “Translation of symbols”, “Translation of the utterances towards the subject”, “Translation of Intertextual elements” and “Various examples of designificative tendencies”, it was found out that 16 examples in total included designificative tendencies. During the translation evaluation process in which Öztürk Kasar’s “the Systematics of Designification in Translation” was utilized, the translators’ decisions were analyzed within a descriptive approach by refraining from error-hunting.
