OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of 23 clinical skills of the fourth and fifth year medical students. Which have been trained by Family Medicine, Medical Education and other related departments during the first, second and third years. METHODS: A questionnaire regarding 23 clinical skills was administered to 165 fourth year and 125 fifth year medical students. The items in the questionnaire included the performance of the skill, use of gloves, performance under supervision, and the place of the performance. RESULTS: The most commonly performed clinical skills were blood pressure measurement (97.2%), venous blood withdrawal (91.4%) and arterial blood withdrawal (87.9%) when the fourth and the fifth years were evaluated together. Application of intrauterine device (0.7%), episiotomy (1.4%) and birth assistance (3.1%) were the least performed skills. All of the students stated that they have used gloves on gynecological examination, application of intrauterine device, birth assistance and episiotomy, the least use of gloves was on pregnancy examination (59.3%), intramuscular injection (60.7%) and subcutaneous injection. Amongst the clerkships, General Surgery, where the students were on duty during their clerkship, was the ward where most of the skills were performed. CONCLUSION: In order to perform the clinical skills and achieve proficiency before graduation, it would be an appropriate approach to follow the performance of the students by report cards and forward them to perform the skills.
