Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Türk milletinin Kur’an-ı Kerim’in manasını bilmeden okuduğunu görmüş ve milletinin inandığı kutsal kitabın içeriğinden haberdar olmasını istemiştir. 1925 yılında Kur’an-ı Kerim’i Türkçeye tercüme ve tefsir ettirmek için girişimlerde bulunmuştur. Tercüme ve tefsir işi bittikten sonra Türkçe olarak on bin adet Kur’an-ı Kerim basılmış ve bütün masraflarını Atatürk karşılamıştır. Atatürk, Kur’an-ı Kerim’i anlamadan okumanın insana sevap kazandıracağını ancak ibadet yerine geçmeyeceğini söylemiştir. İbadet etmek için inanılan kutsal kitabın manasının anlaşılarak okunması gerektiğini ifade etmiştir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin son dönemlerinde bazı Türk aydınları da din dilinin Türkçeleştirilmesini düşünmüş ancak uygulamaya koyamamışlardır.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk saw that the Turkish people read the Quran without knowing the meaning of the Quran and wanted his people to be aware of the content of the holy book they believed in. In 1925, he made attempts to translate and interpret the Qur'an into Turkish. After the translation and tafsir work was completed, ten thousand copies of the Quran were printed in Turkish and Atatürk covered all the expenses. Atatürk said that reading the Qur'an without understanding it will earn people rewards, but it will not replace worship. He stated that in order to worship, the meaning of the holy book should be read and understood. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, some Turkish intellectuals also thought about making the language of religion Turkish, but they could not put it into practice.
