During the First World War, a large number of Turkish soldiers were imprisoned by the Russians in the Battle of the Kafkas Front. These prisoners were sent to Baku after they were gathered in Sarıkamış, Kars and Tiflis stations. Some of the prisoners were sent to prison camps in Siberia, and some were sent to the Nargin Island, 10-15 kilometers away from Baku in the Khazarian Sea. In addition to Turkish soldiers, German and Hungarian soldiers are detained in prison. During the First World War, many Turkish soldiers were captured by the Russians during the battles in the Caucasian Front. These prisoners were transferred to Baku after being undertaken in Sarıkamış, Kars and Tbilisi stations. Some of the prisoners were sent to prison camps in Siberia, and some of them were sent to Nargin Island near Baku. Besides Turkish soldiers, German and Hungarian soldiers are also being held captive on the island. In 1916, during the new attacks of Russian Army, civilians including children, women and the old in some provinces such as Erzurum, Erzincan, Bayburt, Gümüşhane and Trabzon were captured because they were thought to be suspicious or reported by Armenians. Those civilians were captured and headed to Nargin Island in Baku. A young man named Yusuf from a village in the district of Sürmene in Trabzon is one of these civilians. Abdürrrahim Rahmi Zapsu wrote a treatise describing what this young man experienced in Nargin. In 1918, Abdürrahim Rahmi Zapsu published his poetic theatre play “The Memories of a Captive Child” in Baku, after he escaped from the prison camp of Russia in Nargin. This play was not rereleased, and the Baku copy is missing. However, in the same year, the book reappeared when Trabzon Serasî Printing House republished Abdürrahim Rahmi's “The Disaster of an Eight-Year-Old Captive: Captivity Memories in Russia”. The reason why it was printed in Trabzon is probably that the boy named Yusuf, whose memories are cited in the poem is from a village of Trabzon's Sürmene district. It can be said that the publication of the work in Trabzon has surely helped it survive since the original Baku copy is missing. The original copy is now at the Library of Bilkent University. This study presents the information about the content of the work and reviews the conditions in the Nargin prison camp as Abdürrahim Rahmi Zapsu narrated it from the point of view of a child named Yusuf, taken at the time away from a village in Sürmene district of Trabzon. The whole original text by Latin alphabet is added as an appendix.
