Abstract:

Abstract Being one of the political parties that made an appearance in Turkish political life with Turkey's transition to a multi-party system The Nation Party (NP) has important aspects that are worth being researched despite its short life and not-so-shiny political adventure. The international atmosphere following the World War II made countries push for their legitimate places in the new world order. In this regard the transition to a multi-party system in Turkey deserves particular attention. Sharing the opposition seats in the parliament with the Democratic Party (DP) in the first years of the multi-party life the NP has an important place not only for being one of the first political parties of the Republic but also for having a significant impact on politics even after it was proscribed. This article purposes to evaluate the NP within the context of origin theories and typologies that are put forward about the political parties. Mainly this work tries to answer the questions "How the NP can be explained in the framework of origin theories? With regards to political party typologies to which one it suits the best?". The main conclusion reached with regards to origin theories is that the NP can be included within the category of inside-parliamentary parties, that its the origin can be explained with representation and modernisation crises. In the context of party typologies, it is understood that the NP shows the characteristics of a cadre party according to one approach and the party of individual representation according to another.
