Eski Türkler Orta Asya ve yakınındaki coğrafyalarda topluluk ve kabileler halinde yaşamışlardır. Bu arkaik dönemde ve bu coğrafyada yaşayan topluluklarla paralel biçimde var olan ve kökleri de parçası olduğu topluluk gibi geçmişe uzanan inanç sistemleri bulunmaktadır. Eski Türklerin kendi adlandırmaları ile “kam”, daha çok bilinen ve evrensel kullanımı ile “şaman”lar tarafından yönetilen ve uygulanan bu inanç sistemlerine “Şamanizm” adı verilmektedir. Şamanizm yalnızca bir inanç sistemi olarak görülmemelidir, başlı başına eski Türklerin coğrafyasında, kültürel ve toplumsal bir üst belirleyici olarak toplulukların ayırt edici bir niteliği olmuştur. Bu yapı içerisinde Şaman hem transandantal aracılık halinin, toplumsal olana yansıması olarak yöneten ve yönetilen arasında bir “aracı” hem de topluluk halinden topluma ve nihayetinde devletleşmeye gidilen süreçte bir anlamda “katalizör” görevi görmüştür. Ancak özellikle topluluktan topluma ve sonrasında devletleşmeye geçişte Şamanın rolleri değişime uğramıştır. Bu çalışma Şaman’ın yalnızca dini bir figür ya da mitolojik köklere sahip bir büyücü olmadığı bunların yanı sıra topluluk içindeki toplumsal rollerinin neler olduğu üzerinde duracak ve bahsi geçen bu rollerin ve Şaman figürünün geçirdiği değişimlerin yapısını ve etkilerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
The ancient Turks lived in communities and tribes in Central Asia and nearby geographies. There are belief systems that exist in parallel with the communities living in this archaic period and geography and that extend back to the past, such as the community with which it is rooted. "Kam", as the ancient Turks call it, is more commonly known and universally used; and these belief systems, which are led and implemented by "shamans", are called "Shamanism". Shamanism should not only be seen as a belief system, but in itself, in the geography of the ancient Turks, it has been a distinctive quality of communities as a cultural and social determinant. Within this structure, Shaman acted as both an "intermediary" between the governed and the governed as a reflection of the transcendental mediation state on the social one, and a "catalyst" in a sense in the process from community to society and ultimately to nationalization. However, the shaman's role has changed, especially in the transition from community to society and then to nationalization. This study will focus on what the shaman is not only a religious figure or a wizard with mythological roots, but also what their social role is within the community and aims to examine the structure and effects of these roles and the changes undergoing by the Shaman figure.
