Etik Bir Tartışma Konusu: Hume ve Kant Örneğinde İntihar
2019

Abstract:

A Ethical Debate: Suicide in Hume and Kant's Example
2019
Author:
Abstract:

Suicide is a type of death with a philosophical, religious, ethical, cultural, legal, historical, medical and sociological meaning. There is an agreement on how difficult it is to understand the action itself at the end. The attitude toward suicide can establish a parallel between the fear and anger he has heard from him and the crime. The fact that suicide, which is a stranger to the Musevi-Helen tradition, was a crime appeared in the fifth century of Christianity. The church has begun to take a strong attitude towards suicide since this century. The Christian tradition requires to take into account the historical etymology of the concept of suicide prohibition that regulates social relations with God. In other words, “suicide” (suicide), which is derived from the Latin words “sui” (self) and “caedres” (killing), which is used in the Western languages in response to the word “suicide” (suicide), shows in a historical perspective how this taboo is placed. The two philosophers, which were the subject of the study, also discussed suicide in this historical context. With a small narrative he wrote, Hume shows why suicide is not a crime committed against God, society, and man. Kant explains why suicide is not legitimate in his various works in different periods. Considering the examples he gave in his first period writings, Kant did not show a clear attitude, but in the second period he did not accept suicide under any circumstances according to the morality of the task. Hume and Kant, who have two opposite views on suicide, are contributing to the questioning of the right questions in the debate on the moral ground of the problem today.
