Özet:

Hasan Eskil's Giritli Feride tells the story of the oppression of the Greeks in Crete against Turks at the end of the 19th century and the story of a Turkish group who had to migrate from Crete to Anatolia, putting Feride, and partly Derviş Ali, at the center of the story. After Feride's migration to Anatolia, the Greek occupation in the Aegean regions, the National Struggle and the War of Independence, which resulted in victory, were also discussed putting Feride at the center. In the novel, the third person omniscient point of view and summarization method is used to present historical developments from a broader perspective and as a panoramic background. In addition, the Mevlevi (Mawlawi) and the Mevlevihane (Mawlawi-khana) were among the topics mentioned throughout the novel, mostly as a background. In the novel, the issue of "Crete" (which also gives its name to the novel) and the difficulties and suffering of the Turks, and the feeling of strangeness after reaching Anatolia, are highlighted. The Greek invasion was considered –especially from the perspective of Feride- as a continuation of the fear and pain of statelessness and as a revenge that should be taken. Nevertheless, Feride did not kill the young Greek soldier who fell into her hands on the battlefield after the victory, and gave water to him and the other soldiers without separating the Turks and Greeks. In this way, using Feride, the protagonist, as a reflector, the author wanted to show that, what "revenge" meant to him is evenness and salvation rather being a feeling of resentment towards a whole nation.
