Abstract:

Due to the negativities experienced in the last century of the Ottoman Empire, institutions and society had to be restructured. In this context, some political and cultural reforms were made for the empire to regain its former power. These reforms, which are called the Westernization movement, had a great impact on the clothing culture of the people living in the empire. Particularly, the people, who preferred traditional clothing items in the period that existed until the specified period, had the opportunity to meet with the clothes and accessories of the European fashion of the period, which can be described as different for them, with these westernization movements that took place over time. In the current period, especially the media outlets of the period have tried to adapt hats to men's, women's and children's clothing. In the Republic of Turkey, which was established after the Ottoman Empire, the hat started to be included in our lives as an accessory belonging to European fashion with the hat revolution in 1925. The hat has appeared in various shapes and missions since the day it appeared on the stage of history, both in organizing social life and in political and artistic life In this study, it is aimed to reveal the course of the hat and hat culture in the process from the last period of the Ottoman Empire to the early republican era and up to the present day. In line with the current purpose, postgraduate theses, articles, books, magazines and visual data were examined and the change of the hat in the specified historical process was examined with examples.
