Work culture and identity are constructs typically investigated from specific areas of the diverse social sciences and thereby we inevitably fall into a reductionism that impoverishes any attempt to consistent understanding. In this article, using a practical example, we suggest that it is desirable to start from an epistemological, theoretical and methodological “integrated model by default” in order to investigate work identity and culture. Here, it takes the form of an etnobiographical look (a mix of biographical perspective, the qualitative-dialectical paradigm and a model of research-action-participation).
