Results of Central Splenorenal Shunt in The Surgical Treatment of Esophageal Variceal Hemorrhage

Abstract:

In this article, 23 patients with bleeding esophageal varices treated with end to side central splenorenal shunt, have been reported. The causes of portal hypertension are liver cirrhosis in 23, congenital hepatic fibrosis in one and cavernomatous transformation of portal vein in another. Three patients died in the early postoperative period. Encephalopathy was observed in 15 percent, and variceal hemorrage 20 percent of patients in the follow up period. Early mortality rate was 13 percent and two years survival rate was 70 percent.
