Abstract:

Abstract Objective: Ultrasonography (US) is a widely used modality in practice in the evaluation of adnexal masses. Physiological follicles and corpus luteum cysts in premenopausal woman is the most common benign adnexal masses. Therefore; it is important that diagnosis of masses and pre-treatment determination of the physiological follicular cysts do not require operation among benign masses. Materials and Methods: One hundred and nine patients underwent US and coloured Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) in view of benign adnexal mass were investigated in our hospital, retrospectively. In the study, to be able to distinguish physiological follicular cysts of the other benign adnexal masses, the findings of patients's US and CDU, clinical data, and value of CA125 were examined and investigated whether diagnostic contrubituon is. Parametric variables were compared by independent sample t test, nonparametric ones were compared chi-square test. When p < 0.05 is it was accepted that difference between variables was significant. Results: Seventy three patients (67%) whose mass is evaluated as follicular cyst named as group 1, whereas 36 patients (33%) whose mass is evaluated as the other benign adnexal masses named as group 2. Between groups mean age and mean mass's diamater were different (34 vs 42; p = 0.003, 5 vs 7 cm; p = 0.001, respectively). Additionally, mass contour feature, the internal structure of the mass and intramass vascularization were statistically different between groups, while RI value, pathological vascularization increase and CA-125 values were not different. Conclusion: In premenopausal period, cystic lesion with small-sized, regular contour, homogeneous echo without heterogeneous solid component is likely to be physiological follicle cyst. In assessment of physiological follicular cysts, we could consider that US findings is more valuable than CDU findings and CA-125 value. Key words; Ultrasonography, coloroud Doppler Ultrasonography, Benign adnexal mass.
