Abstract:

Places of worship are important structures in social life, not only for personal worship, but also for meeting people in society, getting together and helping each other. In this context, although collective worship has existed since ancient times, it has never been a convincing principle for the spatial formation of this place of worship. In addition, the units and elements in this structure emerge according to the needs of the age and society, and accordingly, their positions and characters in the space are determined over time. The aim of the study is to examine the architectural components of places of worship, which adopt new approaches in Turkey and abroad, based on examples of tradition in each country, and then show and compare how these two countries differ from tradition. In this case, two structures were chosen; Etimesgut Mosque designed by Cengiz Bektaş and Light Church designed by Tadao Ando. These identified structures were evaluated according to the 'Design Criteria', which should be taken into account when designing the place of worship, including the architectural arrangements. Design criteria are classified with the elements that should be in places of worship in the light of architectural principles. In the study, a comment was made as a result of the comparison of the design data of traditional places of worship, using new technologies and materials, in the context of the conditions of the day. It is hoped that these two exemplary buildings, which have changed traditional structures such as places of worship, which are very difficult to change, as well as modernizing spatial designs today, will offer different perspectives to other modern architectural pursuits.
