Administration of intravenous and oral contrast media (CM) for the radiographic imaging is widely used. Adverse reactions to CM are considered allergy-like, with cutaneous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal system symptoms. Allergy-like reactions are usually unpredictable. Although allergy-like reactions are more frequent with ionic than nonionic material, the frequency of deaths is usually identical. Many reports of allergic reactions to intravenous CM have been reported; however, there have been a few case of a life-threatening reaction to the oral CM. We present a case of a severe anaphylactic reaction following oral ingestion of water soluble, iodinated contrast.
