Intensive care units are the units where patients in critical condition and in life threatening danger are monitored while supporting and improving their vital functions with special treatment and care teams. The health care team in intensive care units are functional teams where every care group is gathered for a common purpose and working collaboratively while sharing responsibility and authority. Contribution of each member in the team to patient care is valuable. An inadequate care or non functioning of a care group effects the whole success of intensive care services and causes critical outcomes in patient care process. The effective fulfillment of heathcare services depends on organizational reasons as well as the quality and quantitiy of the professional providing the care along with the quality of the relations between professionals. Disharmony in intensive care team effects the team members while having a direct negative effect on the patients they provide care and resulting an inevitable extension of the patient’s healing process. However in the intensive care units, reason of existence of the team members is to provide individualized and integrated care to patients. One way to achieve this fundamental objective is to create a team in intensive care units that works effectively, efficiently and also provide harmonious functionality. In this article, the definition of teamwork, the importance of teamwork in intensive care services, teamwork process and features, the benefits, drawbacks and problems faced regarding teamwork and suggestions for solving them is mentioned.
