Şiir çevirisi şair, eleştirmen ve mütercimlerin zihinlerini meşgul eden bir konudur. Bu konu uzun süre devam eden edebi tartışmalardan biri olup şu ana kadar üzerinde ittifak edilmemiştir. Bu konudaki tartışmalar, milattan önce yaşamış olan Romalı şair Horatius’a kadar uzanmaktadır. Câhiz de bu konuda görüşlerini belirtmiştir. Şiir çevirisi aynı zamanda modern dönemde dilbilim ekollerinin ve yapısalcıların ilgisini çekmiş bir konudur. Bu çalışma şiir çevirisi hakkındaki görüşleri değerlendirerek şiir çevirisi konusunu imkaniliği açısından incelemektedir. Bu konuda görüş belirtenler üç kısma ayrılmaktadır. Bir kısım alim, şiirin çeviride ruhunu kaybetmesi, vezin ve belagat özelliklerini yitirmesi sebebiyle şiir çevirisini mümkün görmemektedir. Şiir verisini uygun görenler ise bu hususta bazı şartlar ileri sürmektedir. Diğer bir grup ise şiir çevirisi konusunda bu tartışmaya girmeden şiir çevirisini hiçbir şart gözetmeden mümkün görmektedir. Bu yaklaşım kasidenin şeklinde ve şiirin genel anlamında köklü değişikliklere sebep olmaktadır.
Most of critics and translators have always been preoccupied by the dilemma of poetry translation. And among those who saw the translation of poetry permissible, but it must have conditions, And a third group did not pay attention to this debate, and went on to translate poetry profusely. The translation that had an impact on the form of the poem and the concept of poetry in general.
