Abstract:

Conceptual Art, which spread after 1960, defended the idea of unlimited creativity instead of talent, began to question the nature, traditions, rules and contexts of art. The new concept and process-focused art thought has been influential in strengthening the conceptual creation in the field of fashion design. As a result of this interaction, "cavrational fashion design" has created a field that allows the artist/designer to express himself freely and originally. As with the approaches of conceptual artists, fashion designers have also begun to question the aesthetic qualities, material, structure, meaning and representation of fashion. The basic forms found in the structure of traditional fashion, the clothing forms that emphasize the interaction of textile and body have changed along with the conceptual fashion, the understanding of the aesthetic and functional form has left its place to the conceptual approach that holds thought in the forefront.  In this study, the attention of the points between the conceptual fashion and the conceptual art has been made to reveal the connections that exist between them.  In line with this goal, the conceptual art of Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, from the major representatives of Conceptual Fashion, has been translated into innovative contemporary fashion design practices.
