Abstract:

The aim of this study is to identify the accompanying chronic diseases in individuals diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and to investigate the effects of these diseases on BPPV recurrence and prognosis. The data of a total of 106 individuals (the average age of 53,29 ± 15,08) from 72 women (68%) and 34 men (32%) diagnosed with BPPV were analyzed retrospectively. Results: In this study, 55.7 percent of individuals were diagnosed with acute BPPV and 44.3 percent were subclinical BPPV. 61.4% of individuals have chronic illness. 34.2 percent of individuals experienced hypertension alone or in addition to other chronic diseases, while 10.8 percent experienced hypertension and type II diabetes mellitus. The BPPV recurrence in the study is 70.8%. In 28.3% of individuals with chronic illness and 21.7% of non-chronic illness, BPPV recurred within 1 year after the first attack. Result: The questioning of the information of chronic disease accompanied in patients assessed with suspicion of BPPV is also recommended for individuals with chronic disease and vertigo complaints to be assessed from the point of view of BPPV. In particular, high blood pressure and type II diabetes mellitus should be taken into account that patients with common diabetes type II may be at risk of BPPV.
