The increase in the number of poor people in the world, the lack of adequate education and health facilities for communities, the formation of gender inequality and the increase in environmental problems arising from the global warming have encouraged the United Nations to create development programs under the name of Sustainability. In this context, the financial, social and environmental objectives are mainly set to be achieved by the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The participating banking system also has a potential role in achieving sustainable development and supports the development of financial inclusion, social benefit-based financing and environmentally friendly activities in accordance with its values and principles. In this regard, the sustainability activities of participating banks in Turkey have been emphasized, and the steps to be taken for both social and environmental benefits and for the development of participating banking. In particular, the expansion of the product range with instruments such as the Green Hole and the Micro-Credit, the implementation of partnerships with international institutions such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the systematic implementation of social responsibility projects, the leadership of self-funding, the revision of credit policies with the aim of creating a positive impact on climate change and the basis of the principle of customer focus are among the most important sustainability steps. In addition to the increase in the reputation and prestige of companies adopting sustainability activities as an institution strategy, the expansion of the range of products and services, the increase in the profitability of transactions is also among the positive outcomes of sustainability activities.
