Abstract:

The Balkans remained under Ottoman domination for more than five centuries. From the first years of the Balkans' conquest, the Ottoman government carried out a systematic settlement policy here. The government settled the Turkish-Muslim people, brought from different parts of Anatolia to the conquered territories. The region was Turkified and Islamized in a short time with the settlement policy realized after the first conquests. Along with the demographic change experienced an extensive zoning activity was carried out in the region. New cities and settlements were established while the existing cities were being built with a new understanding. The settlement activities started with the settlement of the Turks to the region and many inns, hammams, madrasahs, mosques and masjids were built. Thus, Turkish-Islamic culture and civilization began to settle in these lands. The conquest, the settlement and the zoning of the Ottoman State in the Balkans were carried out in a specific plan. The Ottoman domination began to be established in Greece with the conquest of Dimetoka in 1361. Towards the end of the XIV century, following the conquest of Dimetoka, the central part of Greece, the Tesalia region, became Ottoman dominated. Trikala Sanjak was established here as an administrative unit and the sanjak remained under Ottoman dominance for about five centuries. The sanjak, which was transferred to Greece by the Istanbul Treaty signed in 1881, left many Ottoman architectural works in Greece. This study aims to reveal the legacy of the Ottoman abandoned in Greece, based on the foundation records. Consequently, the number and type of immovable properties that were left to Greece from Trikala Sanjak were given.
