Throughout history, studies on how to teach language have brought new ideas, claims and assumptions about foreign language teaching. As a result of those ideas, the grammar-translation method, generated to teach languages such as Latin, Sanskrit and Sumerian, is considered the beginning of foreign language teaching studies. The grammar-translation method also became a guide for other foreign language teaching methods due to its deficiencies. One of the most important deficiencies about this method is probably about its inability to improve speaking and listening skills. This makes the grammar-translation method inefficient in teaching of modern languages by causing problems in communication. As it can be understood from the sample lesson plan given, the grammar-translation method has a very important role in Sanskrit language teaching since its main goal is to translate from Sanskrit language into target language. Through the grammar-translation method, it is aimed to have individuals who master the vocabulary and the grammar rules of Sanskrit. By attaining the level that is sufficient to translate from the source language (Sanskrit) to the target language (Turkish), the goal of teaching Sanskrit as a foreign language can be achieved.
