Objective: This study aims to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents attend a social-educational program in an NGO in West São Paulo. Materials and Methods:We investigated 349 children andadolescents, 148 (42%) children 6 to 9 years (77 girls and 71 boys) and 201 (58%) adolescents aged 10 to 15 years (104 girls and 97 boys) . The criterion for diagnosing overweight and obesity were used cutoffs of body mass index (BMI). The data were classified by BMI z-score according to BMI / age according to WHO, 2007.Results and Discussion: The overall prevalence of overweight and obesity for ages 6 to 9 years was 14% and 19% for the age age 10 to 19 years.When separated by gender children from 6 to 9 year old male had 21% of overweight and obese women and 8%. Already in adolescents aged 10 to 15 years, males and females showed 22% 16%. In both age groups males had a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity in relation to female. The results of this study show that child malnutrition has lost strength and overweight and obesity has increased considerably in recent years. Conclusion:we conclude that it is relevant to the growing problem of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents, whichis higher among males compared to females of both age groups evaluated in this study.
