Girişimcilik kavramı daha önce de değişik anlamlarda kullanılmıştır. Neo-klasik iktisatçılar ise piyasa sürecinde girişimcinin karlığını ve girişimcinin piyasanın bir parçası olabileceğini görmemişlerdir; çünkü ekonominin tam rekabetçi genel denge durumunda olduğunu kabul etmişlerdir. Girişimcinin ekonomik kalkınma ve gelişmede önemli roller oynadığı 20. yüzyılın başlarında ancak fark edilmiş ve ekonomik analizlerde yer almaya başlamıştır. Bu bağlamda Schumpeter’in çalışmaları çok önemlidir. O’na göre ekonomik gelişmeyi sağlayan mekanizma, girişimcinin yeni icatlarla, ekonominin mevcut akışını değiştirmesidir. Avusturya okulununönemli iktisatçılarından olan Kirzner ise, girişimcinin bu sıfatı alabilmesi için yeni icatlarda bulunmasının zorunlu olmadığını belirtmiştir. Kirzner’e göre üretici ve tüketicilerin planlarının uyuşmasını sağlamak da girişimcilik içinde yer almaktadır. Bu yazının amacı, piyasadaki belirsizliğin giderilmesinde girişimcinin rolünü tartışmaktır. Bu açıdan, Shumpeter, Marx Kirzner’in görüşleri analiz edilmiştir
