The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of parent’s language control types on children’s empathic ability and how children’s empathic ability changes according to matched or unmatched language control type of mother and father. The research participants were 74 children, 36 boys and 38 girls, aged between four and five years in a private kindergarten in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea and 74 fathers and mothers, respectively. According to the analyzed result, there was a significant difference between parent’s language control types statistically. First, fathers’ personality-oriented language control type influenced children’s total score of empathic ability like sadness and happiness. Second, the personality-oriented language control of mothers influenced their children’s empathic ability total score and anxiety. Third, according to parent’s matched or unmatched language control type, when fathers and mothers used personality-oriented language, this affected children’s empathic ability total score and happiness. This study identified that children’s empathic ability development was closely affected by the type of language control that the parents used. In particular, children whose parents used personality-oriented language control type had higher empathic ability for other people. Key Words: Parent, Language Control Type, Empathic Ability.
