Abstract:

This study aims to identify and study high school students’ metaforic perceptions of physical concepts. The research is made by high school students in Kocaeli province. The study used the method of systematic metafor analysis of the research methods. The data collection form is "Force ........................ is like, because ........................" A form is presented to the questioned participants with their answers. Data collection tools have been created for each of the concepts of force, energy and pressure that are determined to be included in the study as indicated in the example. For application reliability, Kappa statistics have been used to find out that it is well compatible with the 80 percent consistency. The obtained data is processed in a five-step data analysis process. These stages include coding and extracting, creating a sample metafor list, categorizing, providing validity and reliability, and converting metafores into quantitative data. The frequency and percentage values obtained from the data are classified by calculating. The metaphors created by the participants were gathered under 4 categories, taking into account the common features. Another category of metaphors is also made according to the size of ontological metaphors. The results of the analysis found that among the categories determined the participants were concentrated in the category of "life-related metaphors" and in the ontological metaphor dimensions they were concentrated in the category of "defining measures and motivating actions". The study indicates the place and importance of metaphors in the teaching of science and provides detailed analysis of the concepts of strength, energy and pressure.
