Yabancı bir dilde roman okumak, onu kendi diline doğru olarak aktarmak, bir tür olarak romanı tanımak ve tanıtmak ilk devirlerin önemli uğraşlarındandır. Bu makale Batılı bir tür olan romanın tercüme yoluyla edebiyatımıza girdiği 19. yy Türk basınını meşgul eden bir tartışmayı ele almaktadır. Bu tartışma, tercümeye yeni başlamış bir toplumun roman tercümelerinde takip edeceği yol ile, yapılan tercümeler üzerine yapılan tenkitleri içerir
