In ancient times, the concept of scapegoat is one of the oldest examples of the practice of sacrificing, accusing, and targeting. In the modern political sphere, the scapegoat turns into an image of salvation in times of crisis, becoming a cover for political loss of responsibility, making it difficult to reveal the truth and find the real responsible. This article aims to analyze how the scapegoat motif, which is far from being a concept to be mythicised in the modern age, has turned into an enemy strategy by political actors, and how it is used in political discourse in the context of forest fires. The forest fires in Turkey between 27 July and 12 August 2021 are considered a moment of suitable crisis for political polarization and scapegoat production. In this context, the news that is constructed with political discourse in Aydınlık, Sabah, and Yeni Safak newspapers will be analyzed with the method of political discourse analysis in the context of scapegoat production and hostility in the political sphere. The study ends with the finding that scapegoat discourse in time of crisis constitutes a ground of legitimacy by political actors through various discursive mechanisms.
