The Interpretive Theory of Translation (the Theory of Sense) developed by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer provides an approach placing translators at the centre of research. The research on the history of translation theories observed that the notions and views highlighting the role of translators have emerged over the last centuries. The cognitive approaches have contributed to the field of translation over the last two decades thanks to their implications in applied translation studies. Thus, the translator, the major actor in intercultural and/or interlingual transfer, has been reevaluated in terms of cognition. Cognitively oriented translation approaches project that the cognitive processes of translation and the language using mechanism should be revealed. These approaches focus on the role of translators and claim that the success of a translation depends on the translator. The aim of this paper is to suggest the determinations highlighted as the conditions of ‘comprehension’ in accordance with the The Interpretive Theory of Translation (the Theory of Sense). The other aim is to introduce the projections as to the required qualifications of translators. In parallel with this aim the paper focuses on exploring how the cognitive proccesses occur in the process of comprehension of sense, and how the translator manages these processes. The Interpretive Theory of Translation (the Theory of Sense) and The Interpretive Method of Translation, which are based on discourse analysis, are described in terms of their theoretical foundations.
