Obezite gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerde sıklığı gittikçe artan önemli bir sağlık sorunudur. Sık görülmesinin yanında hipertansiyon ve diyabet gibi fiziksel hastalıklara depresyon ve anksiyete gibi psikolojik sorunlara neden olabilmekte hastalık ve ölüm oranlarını artırarak yaşam kalitesini ve süresini olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir. Obezite hem neden olduğu ölümler hem de kronik hastalık olması nedeniyle iş gücünde azalma ve sağlık harcamalarında artışa neden olarak ülke ekonomisini etkilemektedir. Günümüzde obeziteye ilişkin riskleri azaltmada obezite yönetiminin gerekli olduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Obezite yönetiminde öncelikle yaşam tarzı değişikliklerinin uygulanması önerilmektedir. Uygun yaşam tarzı değişikliklerini düzenlemede hemşirenin eğitici rolü önemlidir. Eğitimlerin etkili olması için eğitim stratejileri yanında eğitime rehberlik edecek nitelikli bakım modellerinin kullanılması gereklidir. Sağlık inanç modeli, olumsuz yaşam tarzlarını değiştirmede kullanılan etkin bir rehber olarak açıklanmaktadır.
