Bir sözün aksinin ima edilmesi anlamına gelen ironi dünya ve Türk edebiyatında kullanılan bir anlatım tekniğidir. Klasik dönemde tiyatroda yaygın olarak kullanılan ironi, modern edebiyatın en çok başvurdu- ğu kullanım tekniklerinden biri olmuştur. Türk edebiyatında ironiyi başarıyla kullanan yazarlardan biri Adalet Ağaoğlu’dur. Adalet Ağaoğlu; sistem eleştirisini ironi ve hiciv aracılığıyla yapar. Roman ve hikâye yazarlığına toplumcu gerçekçilik tartışmalarının yoğun olduğu 12 Mart döneminde başlayan Adalet Ağaoğlu, bu dönemin angaje ve popülist edebiyat anlayışına tepki göstermiştir. Roman ve hikâyelerinde biçimsel yeniliklerle angaje edebiyatı eleştirir. Bu anlamda onun eserleri diğer 12 Mart dönemi eserlerinden ayrılır. Hikâyelerinde tema olarak devrin meseleleri ve ideolojik konuları işlese de estetik kaygıları birinci plandadır. Adalet Ağaoğlu, ihtilal döneminin psikolojik baskısı içerisinde kinayeli, örtülü söyleme aracı olarak ironiye başvurur.
