Abstract:

Ibn Abi Zayd al-Kavravani (d. 386/996) is an important scholar belonging to the Maliki sect, who lived in a period (IV century) and geography (North Africa) when there were intellectual differences in Islamic thought, conflicts between sects and difficult socio-political conditions prevailed. He adopted the method of the Salaf creed against the Mu'tazili, Murjii, Kharijite, Shiite and other currents of thought, defended the Maliki school, contributed to the spread of the sect and played an important role in the transmission of the Ahl al-Sunnah thought to the next generations. However, realizing that the Salaf method he used against the aforementioned currents of thought was insufficient, Kavravani found it appropriate and appreciated the struggle of Ebu'l-Hasan al-Ash'ari (d. 324/935-36), who was also a member of the Maliki fiqh, against such currents. This sympathy of Qayrawani to Ash'ari made it inevitable for him to be influenced by Ash'ari. In the study, the theological views of Ibn Ebî Zeyd el-Kavravani are discussed in terms of his works named er-Risâle and el-Câmi'. In addition, Qairawani's attitude, position and the method he adopted between Salafi and Ash'ari accusations were tried to be revealed.
