Çok partili hayata geçiş sürecinin önemli mihenk taşlarından olan Demokrat Parti, Türkiye’de bir döneme damgasını vurmuştur. Gerek kuruluşu ve gerekse muhalefet ve teşkilatlanma açısından bakıldığından Demokrat Parti, Halk Partisi’ne şekil yönden ciddi olarak benzemektedir. Fakat ideolojiyi algılama ve yönetim uygulamalarıyla Halk Partisi’nden ayrılır. Demokrat Parti 1946 Genel Seçimlerine kırk beş ilde aday gösterebilmiş, bilhassa doğunun birçok ilinde teşkilatlanmaları tamamlanamadığı için aday gösterememişlerdir. Aday gösterilmeyen vilayetlerden biri de Diyarbakır’dır
