Abstract:

Currently, most universities and graduate courses are given online for a variety of reasons, such as improving quality and diversity in education, making interuniversity interactions more efficient, getting more students and reducing economic costs. In this context, the University of Fırat is one of the universities that is conducting some courses at the pre-graduate, bachelor and master level through the method of distance learning. The compulsory Foreign Language English courses that are being taught in the Bachelor and Pre-Bachelor departments are also among the courses given in the distance learning mode from 2017-2018. However, foreign language courses are considered to be unlearned through distance learning, due to the complex structure of the skills and knowledge necessary for language qualification. In this regard, the study aims to evaluate the opinions of students of the Faculty of Sports of the University of Fırat on the course I of English for Distance Education. According to the study conducted on 476 students studying in various departments of the Sports Faculty and taking English lessons, the vast majority of students expressed uncertainly negative opinions about learning a foreign language in a remote-internal environment; it was understood that there were statistically significant differences between the students’ opinions according to gender and section variables. The results of the study were discussed in the corresponding literature and presented in recommendations.
