Abstract:

Zemahşerî wrote his work named Mukaddimetü’l- Edeb which has a dictonary quality at the request of Khwarazmshah ruler Atsız b. Muhammed who wanted to learn Arabic. It is estimated that the work was written between the years 1128-1144 with the available data. An important feature of the work is that it is the only work written as a dictionary in the period of Khwarezm Turkish. The original copy of this work, which was prepared as a dictionary, is lost, but it is known that there are around forty copies in different libraries of the world. The Yozgat copy, on which we will carry out our work, is among the oldest and most comprehensive copies of the work. The copy is currently in the Süleymaniye Library with the number Yozgat-000396. The copyist is İbrahim bin Mahmud Sufi and it was written on 10 Cemâzü-l Evvel 655/25 May 1257. This dictionary, which consists of three parts, namely nouns, verbs and letters, was written in Arabic-Persian and Khwarezm Turkish.The most comprehensive part of the work is the verbs. This section constitutes the three-quarters of the work. The verb vocabulary of the work presents quite different data. Many verbs in the work are not found in other texts written in the Harezm Turkish period. The subject of our study will be on the monosyllabic verbs that we have identified in the Yozgat copy but not witnessed in other Khwarezm Turkish texts. These verbs will be discussed and analyzed in comparison with etymologically different periods and dialects.
