Abstract:

Narratology, which became a separate field of study after the 1960’s, trying to deconstruct the narrative, and to reveal the relationships between the elements of the narrative. Discussions on the nature of the narrative enable the narrator to be handled in the light of different approaches, and thus new concepts are created. One of these concepts is the concept of unreliable narrator put forward by Wayne C. Booth. The reader, who produces various versions of the real author based on her own knowledge and experience, discovers the unreliability through the relationship between the implied author and the narrator. Reliability occurs when the narrator coincides with the implied author, and unreliability arises in the opposite case. Although the concept of the unreliable narrator, which is directly related to the other elements of the text creates a rich discussion environment, it brings with it many theoretical problems. While the detection of unreliability became a theoretical necessity for the narrative, objective answers could not be produced in the face of questions such as its sources, the way it apperence of and its dilemmas. The unreliable narrator is a concept that the reader creates in order to explain the contradictions arising from the narrator. Knotting of the relationship between the unreliable narrator and the reader in the heading "subjectivity" has confined the studies to a limited framework. In this study, the problems of the unreliable narrator, which has not yet been clarified and agreed by the researchers, and the role of the reader in the title of unreliable narrator will be examined.
