Biga kuruluşundan itibaren birçok millete ve medeniyete beşiklik etmiş önemli bir yerleşim merkezidir. Yüzyıllarca tarih sahnesinde kalmış ve her dönemde farklı bir öneme sahip olmuştur.
Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarında Çanakkale Cephesinden gelen gazilerin yaralarını saran bir hastane kenti olmuştur. Kurtuluş Savaşı yıllarında diğer bütün yörelerimiz gibi üstüne düşeni yapmış, ülkenin kurtuluşu için canla başla mücadele etmiştir. Biga’da savaş koşullarını hissetmeyen kalmamıştır.
1914-1918 yılları arasında olan Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nda en önemli cephe Çanakkale Cephesidir. Çanakkale Cephesinde memleketin her tarafından olduğu gibi Biga’dan da savaşanlar vardır. Bunların bir kısmı şehit olmuştur bir kısmı ise gazi. Gazilerimiz içinde Bigalı (Bahçelili) Mehmet Çavuş kahramanlığı ile öne çıkar.
4 Mart 1915 günü Seddülbahir’de düşman gemilerinin bombardıman ateşi altında kıyıya çıkan 60-70 kişilik İngiliz askerini makineli tüfek ve silah üstünlüğüne aldırmadan yanında bulunan 20 kişilik askeriyle durdurur. Ellerindeki eski model tüfekler işe yaramayınca askerlerini süngü hücumuna kaldırır. Kendisi de tüfeğini atarak istihkâm küreği ile düşmana ölümüne saldırır. Sonuçta düşman geri çekilmek zorunda kalır. Deniz Savaşları sırasında düşmanın yaptığı bu en büyük çıkarma başarısızlıkla sonuçlanır. Mehmet Çavuş’ta yaralanır. Tedavi olduktan sonra da “Arkadaşlarım cephede savaşırken ben burada duramam” diyerek yine cepheye koşar. Toplam 16 yıl askerlik yapmıştır. 16 yıl askerlikten sonra vücudunda birçok kurşun iziyle hayatına kaldığı yerden devam etmeye çalışır. Kendisine teklif edilen maddi yardımları; “Ben vatanım için savaştım, para için savaşmadım” diyerek reddeder.
Mehmet Çavuş bugün Bahçeli köyü mezarlığında yatmaktadır.
Biga is an important settlement center that has been the cradle of many nations and civilizations since its establishment. It has remained on the stage of history for centuries and has had a different importance in each era.
During the First World War, it became a hospital city that treated the wounds of veterans from the Dardanelles Front. During the War of Independence, like all our other regions, it did its part and fought hard for the liberation of the country. There is no one left in Biga who does not feel the war conditions.
“Dardanelles Front” was the most important front in the First World-War between 1914- 1918. There were soldiers from Biga as well as from all over the country. Some of the soldiers were wounded and some of them were killed. Of those,the Sergeant Mehmet from Biga is one of the leading character.
On 4the March 1915 at Seddülbahir Front, the Sergeant Mehmet and his 20 soldiers stopped the 60-70 English soldiers stepped the land under the fire of enemy warships ignoring the superiority of their guns and weapons. When their old guns were useless,he ordered his soldiers to attack with their bayonets. Throwing his gun,he attacked the enemy with his showel knowing that he would die. At last the enemy was forced to withdraw. During the sea- wars,the most important attack of the enemy was resulted unsuccessfully. The Sergeant Mehmet was wounded.After his treatment,he ran to to the front again saying “I can’t stay here when my friends are fighting in the front” He has been a soldier for sixteen years. After sixteen years military service,he tried to survive with a lot of bullet marks on his body. He refused the money offered saying “I fought for my country but not for the Money”.
The Sergeant Mehmet lies at the graveyard in the village called Bahçeli.
