Türkler tarafından spor ve savaşa hazırlık maksadıyla yapılan av, hükümdarlar için dinen helâl sayılmıştır. Bu sebeplerden dolayı da Selçuklular dönemindeki önemli faaliyetlerden biri olmuştur. İlk Selçuklu Sultanı Tuğrul Bey’in avlandığına dair bilgiler bulunduğu gibi Sultan Melikşah (1073-1092)’ın av merakının en üst seviyede olduğu bilinmektedir. Öyle ki o, avlamış olduğu ahu ve yaban eşeklerinin tırnaklarından minareler yaptırmıştır. Diğer taraftan Melikşah’ın oğlu Sultan Muhammed Tapar (1105-1118) da av için kullanılan köpek ve parsları seçmek hususunda çok itina göstermiş, Sultan Sencer de avlanan hükümdarlardan biri olmuştur. Selçuklu hanedan mensuplarındaki av merakı, Irak Selçuklu Sultanı Mahmud b. Muhammed Tapar döneminde de devam ettirilmiştir. Rivayete göre onun altın tasmalı 400 (dörtyüz) köpeği vardı. Ayrıca İran coğrafyasından uzakta kurulmuş olan Türkiye Selçuklu sultanları da av faaliyetlerini devam ettirmişlerdir.

The hunting made by the Turks for the purpose of preparing for sports and war was considered religious for the rulers. This is one of the important activities of the Selchukles period. It is known that the first Selçuklu Sultan Tuğrul Mr. was hunted, as it is known that the hunt curiosity of Sultan Melikshah (1073-1092) was at the highest level. So he made minarets from the nails of the ahu and wild sheep he hunted. On the other hand, Melikshah's son Sultan Mohammed Tapar (1105-1118) also showed a lot of insight in the choice of dogs and pars used for hunting, and Sultan Sencer was one of the rulers hunting. The hunting curiosity among the members of the Selçuklu dynasty continued during the Iraqi Sultan Mahmud b. Muhammad Tapar period. According to Rivayete, he had 400 (four hundred) dogs. Turkey's Selçuklu sultan, which was established far from Iran's geography, also continued their hunting activities.
