Abstract:

Irak Selçukluları Devleti’nin içinden çıkan ve bir bakıma onun devamı sayılabilecek Atabey İldeniz’in kurduğu Azerbaycan Atabeyliği, Büyük Selçuklu Devleti’nin yıkılmasından sonra Batı İran ve Kafkaslarda oluşan boşluğu doldurmuştu. Bu devletin son hükümdarı Atabey Özbek, kendisinden önceki atabeyler kadar başarılı bir yönetim ortaya koyamadı. Bu başarısızlığında, şahsi eksikliklerinin yanında bölgedeki bitmek tükenmek bilmeyen iç çekişmelerin de rolü olmuştu. Her şeye rağmen ülkesini bir bütün olarak ayakta tutmayı başarmış, ama Moğol istilasının getirdiği yeni siyasi durum diğer devletler gibi onu da pençesine almakta gecikmemişti. Onun 1225 yılında ölümü ile birlikte bir dönem sona ermiş ve bütün Ortadoğu Moğol hâkimiyetine girmişti.
