Abstract The objective of this article is to problematize the period of economic euphoria of the Juscelino Kubitschek years – and his Goal Plan – presented in the pages of the weekly magazine Manchete and a counterpoint from the reports – of difficult life and absolute misery – contained in the book Quarto de Despejo by Carolina Maria de Jesus. Show the "Brazils", from the second half of the 1950s, from the point of view of this black, poor and favela woman who, like so many others, did not see or was contemplated with the developmentalist policy of the "fifty years in five".
