Bilginin üretilmesinde yaşanan hızlı gelişmeler pek çok alanda olduğu gibi coğrafya biliminde de uzmanlaşmanın belirginleşmesine neden olmuştur. Artan yeni coğrafya bölümü sayısı coğrafyanın alt dallarında uzmanlaşmış coğrafyacıya duyulan gereksinimi artırmıştır. Ancak yeterli sayıda doktoralı eleman yetiştirilememesi nedeniyle coğrafya bölümlerinde bu gereksinim coğrafya dışındaki alanlarda lisans ve lisansüstü programlardan mezun olanlarla karşılanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, örgün öğretim yapan 46 coğrafya bölümündeki öğretim üyelerinin mezun oldukları lisans, yüksek lisans ve doktora programları incelenerek, farklı alanlara ait programlarından mezun olanların tüm öğretim üyeleri içerisindeki dağılımı incelenmiştir. Bunun yanında öğretim üyelerinin makale ve üniversite dışı kaynaklı projeleri de değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Buna göre coğrafya bölümlerindeki öğretim üyelerinin coğrafya/sosyal bilimler eğitimi dahil farklı alanda öğretim almış olma oranlarının lisans seviyesinde % 35,9, yüksek lisans seviyesinde % 18,4, doktora seviyesinde % 14,9 olduğu saptanmıştır. 14 farklı programdan mezun 24 öğretim üyesi 17 farklı üniversitenin coğrafya programında yer almaktadır. 14 farklı program içerisinde 12 öğretim üyesi ile jeoloji mühendisli bölümü başı çekmektedir. Coğrafya/sosyal bilgiler eğitimi programından mezun olan öğretim üyeleri 35 farklı üniversitenin coğrafya programında yer almaktadır. Coğrafya/sosyal bilimler eğitimi dışında farklı alanlardan mezun olan öğretim üyelerinin daha çok 2000 yılı sonrasında kurulan üniversite veya öğrenci almaya yeni başlayan bölümlerde yoğunlaştığı ve bunların çok büyük bir kısmının fiziki coğrafya anabilim dalı kadrolarında yer aldığı tespit edilmiştir. Coğrafya bölümlerinde görev yapan coğrafya/sosyal bilimler eğitimi alan öğretim üyeleri ise eski ve yeni açılan bölümlerde bulundukları gibi hem fiziki hem de beşeri coğrafya anabilim dalında görev yapmaktadırlar.
The rapid developments in the production of information have caused prominent specialization in geography, as in many other fields. The increasing number of new geography departments has increased the need for geographers specialized in the sub-branches of geography. However, since the number of trained staff with doctoral degrees is not sufficient, this need in geography departments is met by the graduates of undergraduate and graduate programs in fields other than geography. In this study, the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs that the academic staff in 46 geography departments providing formal education graduated from were examined, and the distribution of staff who graduated from programs in different fields among all academic staff was identified. In addition, the articles and projects of the academic staff’s non-university resources were also evaluated. Accordingly, the proportion of the academic staff who received education in different fields, including geography/social sciences education, and working in geography departments was found to be 35.9% at the undergraduate level, 18.4% at the master’s level, and 14.9% at the doctoral level. 24 academic staffs graduated from 14 non-geography programs take part in the geography programs of 17 different universities. Geological engineering department leads the way with 12 faculty members among 14 non-geography programs. Academic staffs who graduated from the geography/ social sciences education program are in the geography programs of 35 different universities. It was revealed that academic staff who graduated from non-geography programs fields other than geography/social sciences education were mostly working in universities established after 2000 or departments that had just started to accept students, and a major part of them were working in the physical geography department. Academic staff who graduated geography/ social sciences education and were working in geography departments were working in old and newly founded departments, in both physical and human geography departments.
