Abstract:

Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders affecting the elderly population. The purpose of this study, elderly people living in two neighborhoods in the city of Sanliurfa depression / depressive symptoms, the incidence of depression and / to determine the factors associated with depressive symptoms. The cross-sectional nature of this study, stove - between June 2014 and depending on the Sanliurfa Province Center Bağlarbaşı Ulubatlı were carried out in the neighborhood. the total number of people aged over 50 in the respective region was found to be 1.385, constitute the universe of our study. selected study sample, by working as a field research aimed to reach the entire universe. The study was conducted on a total of 948 people in two neighborhoods has been completed, reaching 68,44% of the universe. As data collection tool in our research, it developed the questionnaire created some socio-demographic factors are thought to play a role in revealing the disease of the elderly, if the house is to determine the depression cases, the Geriatric Depression Scale developed by Hamilton (GDS) was used. SPSS 11.5 statistical database was created using the program and data entry is made. Chi-square test in univariate analysis, the variables with significant regression analysis was performed in a single analysis. 38.7% of the respondents in the survey is the low-risk group for the development of depression, while 61.3% were found to be at high risk. Women have 1.49 times and 1.73 times increase the risk of being uneducated development of depression (p <0.05). Other arguments have no relationship for the development of depression. Because elderly depression / depressive symptoms seen prevalence is high, especially primary health care systems, should be made as routine mental health screening to ensure early diagnosis and effective treatment in all places where the demand for services health of the elderly.
