Illumination is one of the important stages of the history of thought. The ideal of enlightenment is to have an immeasurable confidence in man, mind and experience while facing his religious conception, mythology and hurafels. The advances in technology and natural sciences in the modern era are undoubtedly a result of this value given to the mind and facts. But is the progress that happens in these fields indicating that we are progressing morally? Adorno and Horkheimer will answer this question in the form of "no". The Illumination, which, according to them, is a dialectic historical process, has existed in every period of history, and when it reaches its peak, it turns back into a myth. According to Adorno and Horkheimer, the aim of the Illumination, which represents a progressive ideal, has been from the beginning to eradicate myths, to eradicate the magic of the world, and to save mankind from fear, bringing them to the master position. But at the point of this process, the Enlightenment has damaged itself, and humanity has been convicted of a new kind of barbarism instead of progressing. The mind, which was previously a critical power on its own, has been reduced to authenticity and has begun to serve the protection of the statue. Thought is now such a tool that has lost its objective resistance to prevent it from turning to the bad and destructive instead of the good and the right. Because of the obsession of clarity and solitude that arises in philosophy (who is able to keep the judgment style subject to criticism), speculative thought eats the crowd of words. The positivist understanding of modern times denies any kind of thought that cannot be converted into quantitative expressions by attaching the literary label. The objects of thought have been reduced to matter, and the quality and meaning have begun to see quantity and benefit reputation by leaving a side. In this study, the objective is to study the Criticism of Illumination by the two referred philosophers of the Frankfurt School in the instrumental mind context and to reveal the aspects of the criticism that we think is inappropriate.
