Abstract:

The objective of this study was to identify the level of knowledge and nutritional intake of athletes considered of high performance who participate in training at the high-performance center of the Olympic Village of Manaus. The study was of a transversal type with a sample constituted by ninety (n=90) adult male athletes; with age group between 21 and 36 years old. To establish the nutritional pattern, the Body Mass Index was used, for the average alimentary consumption, in addition to a questionnaire with questions about nutrition to identify the nutritional knowledge. The analysis of the values of the BMI evidences a percentage of overweight greater between the youngest athletes verifying a tendency of linear decline in function of the age. The athletes present an average caloric intake of 4054.39 Kcal/day. The athletes consume a lot of red meat, cheese, breads, potatoes, refreshments, and coffee. Most of the athletes had no knowledge about the main energy source for physical exercise are carbohydrates and that vitamins, water and minerals do not provide calories to the body. It is concluded that the diet of these athletes and their knowledge in nutrition can be an important variable that influences the results of their performance
