Abstract:

Romantic relationships include concepts such as attachment, belonging, support and respect along with the concept of love. This study, aimed to examine the factors affecting the level of dependency in romantic relationships. This study was conducted in a relational survey type with quantitative method. 331 adult individuals, 289 women and 42 men, participated in the study. In the study, the “Dependency in Romantic Relationships Scale”, “Emotional Dependency Scale” and “Ten-Item Personality Scale” and “Personal Information Form” prepared to determine socio-demographic information were used. The data obtained in the study were analyzed by transferring them to the SPSS 24 package program. A significant relationship exists between being male and female and the sub-dimensions of the Dependency in Romantic Relationships Scale, namely devotion, withdrawal, and obsession. It was determined that the mean scores of men were higher than women in terms of commitment, withdrawal, and obsession. It was determined that the mean of the “withdrawal” sub-dimension of the Scale of Dependence in Romantic Relationships was high. It was determined that as the level of commitment, withdrawal and obsession increased, emotional dependency increased, while emotional stability and responsibility decreased. As a result of the analyses, the status of being in a romantic relationship negatively affects the level of dependency (commitment, withdrawal, obsession) in romantic relationships, and positively affects the level of emotional dependency.
