Abstract:

This study explored the effects of workplace culture on female employees’ job satisfaction and career progression, challenges encountered by female employees in the private sector, and motivational factors that contribute to the productivity of women in the private sector of employment. It also examined the relationship between marital status and the job satisfaction. The perceptions of 104 female employees were surveyed and focus groups interviews/discussions conducted from December 2014 to February 2015. Respondents generally perceived that work place culture dominated by patriarchy tendencies, nepotism/favoritism, and attitudes of male colleagues negatively affected women’s career progression and job satisfaction. Results also indicate that: 1). Women make too many compromises in order to gain promotion, 2). Women take pride in their jobs and contributions to the success of their organization and are interested in seeking promotion. The authors propose that this perception could potentially undermine the valuable contributions of women in economic growth. Results indicate that changing organizations’ culture can benefit both employees and organizations. Key Words: Women’s Challenges, Organizational Culture, Job Satisfaction, Motivation, Career Advancement.
